The Social Security Administration (USA) has a web page that lets you pick character names based on birth year.
Enter the birth year of your character and you'll get a screen of the most popular names given to boys and girls that year in order of preference. You can get lists of the top 20, 50, 100, 500, or 1,000 names.

Examples: Your protagonist is 35, in 2006, so that means she was born in 1971. If your story takes place in 1969, your 35-year old charachter was born in 1934.
Factoids:
Jennifer was number one name for girls from 1970 to 1984.
At it's peak, fully 1.6% of all baby girls born were named Jennifer.
In 2004 the name had fallen to 38th place.
